Analysis of 4 Music Magazines - 4. Q Magazine

Good Points:
The most striking convention in the front cover is the main image of the feisty, daunting, seductive, medium close up of Cheryl Cole. This image immediately interacts with the audience as it is direct mode of address and it feels like the image is speaking. The dark colour scheme and rain-drops entices the audience to explore into Cheryl's story. The colour schemes are used very effectively as they harmonize each other presenting the cover more professionally. The masthead 'Q' is effective as it is different to other magazines so instead of it being in the centre, it is on the left third of the magazine in an enlarged form and the red and white collaborate to appeal effectively. 'Rocks' is suitable for the style of the magazine as Q is in the rock genre mainly which could entice the audience to purchase the magazine as it 'rocks' or it could suggest the genre of the magazine is rock and it would appeal to a specific audience. The cover lines are in motion withe the black and red theme of the front cover but is clearly presented to appeal from the background and is highlighted in white. The tag line is 'The UK's Biggest Music Magazine' which makes the reader reassured by the fact that no magazine can compete with Q, its one of a kind. Many magazines use this on the front cover at the top of the page as the naked eye reads from top to bottom which means the reader reads the tag line before anything else. The photography is immense as it creates a dark side to Cheryl's inner feelings, it almost describes the feelings and the effects used is effective as they blend in with the colour schemes. The layout is in place and it makes sense as it is not all over the place and notice that not much space is left stranded as the cover is busy. The design is appealing because the colour schemes also match what the main image includes which is effective.

Bad Points:
I can say that there is absolutely no bad points to the cover, it has successful used the basic conventions of a magazine.
